Women in Transportation- Nairobi

NAIROBI, KENYA – March 8, 2018 – Meet Sarah. She has been a matatu operator for the past seven years. She is a single mother and encourages other women, especially single mothers like her, to join the industry stating that the job has allowed her to raise and educate her children. Her dream is to drive a trailer truck and hopes to save money to go to a driving school and acquire a driving license.

Men dominate the public transportation sector in Nairobi and women have reported many cases of physical, sexual and mental abuse by both industry workers and passengers. The Flone Initiative has a mission of changing these behaviors, envisioning a public transportation sector that is safe for women and girls. (Photo by Monika Korczewski | www.memoriesbymonika.com)
